The Bretton Woods Project is looking for a motivated individual to join its dynamic team. The Project focuses on the World Bank and the IMF to challenge their power, open policy space, and promote alternative approaches. We serve as an information provider, watchdog, networker and advocate.

Use your communications experience and knowledge of international development and/or environmental issues to coordinate and drive forward our communications work, support our research and monitoring work on the World Bank and IMF, and coordinate our reporting/fundraising.
Educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant subject you will have professional experience of producing and disseminating communications products, researching and producing high quality short articles on policy issues, and have a good understanding of international development and/ or environmental issues, as well as familiarity with NGO work.

You will use your excellent communications skills, analytical ability, computer literacy, and project management skills to work productively and cooperatively in a small, highly motivated team that shares your strong commitment to social justice, human rights and environmental sustainability.

• Location: London, UK
• Pay: £25,880 – £27,707 per annum depending on experience + contributory pension (10% of salary)
• 1 year contract (with a possibility of extension)

A. Role Purpose
The Bretton Woods Project seeks to challenge the power of the World Bank and the IMF, open policy space and promote alternative approaches. It is a small organisation established in 1995 by a network of UK development and environment non-government organisations (NGOs). The Project acts as an information provider, watchdog, networker and advocate. The Bretton Woods Project is an ActionAid-hosted project. ActionAid is a UK registered charity no: 274467. The purpose of this role will be: to coordinate and drive forward the organisation's communications work in conjunction with our management team; assist with monitoring and issue-based research related to the World Bank and IMF and relevant economic justice issues; support budget management, fundraising and report writing; and assist with the efficient running of the Project.

B. Key accountabilities

1) Communications (40% of time but higher during first 6 months)
• With support, develop of and implement a communications strategy for the Project in conjunction with the management team
• Coordinate the Project team in writing, editing, proofing and distributing our bi-monthly Update magazine, including writing articles
• Liaise with external contractors to ensure timely production of bi-monthly magazine and other publications
• Develop, write, post and update content on relevant development and environment issues for our website, and other communications outlets, and help with the development of other international civil society websites we support, such as ifiwatch.tv
• Input into the development and design of our reports, briefing papers and other external communications
• Monitor and evaluate our outputs against a range of existing indicators.

2) Research and network support (25% of time)
• Conduct desk-based policy research to support colleagues, or for the production of briefing papers, website or Update articles
• Keep track of selected issues related to the World Bank and IMF, including writing website or Update articles, disseminating information, or producing briefing papers
• Help prepare and facilitate network workshops, and meetings of the network with UK/IFI officials
• Support colleagues to develop strategies on issue-specific work and support advocacy efforts

3) Organisational strengthening (25% of time)
• Support the implementation of the Project's funding plan, including researching key opportunities for funding our work
• With support from issue leads, produce well written, accurate reports for funders and help craft funding proposals
• Liaise with contributing partner NGOs and individual donors
• Complete monthly checks of our budget to ensure proper recording of expenditure, including preparing any relevant reports

4) General support to the Project (10% of time)
• Respond to requests for information and support from team members, and other members of the network
• Help maintain Project information systems, including our contacts database, mailing lists, filing systems etc
• Assist with the efficient running of the office, including supporting general administration, inputting into team meetings, strategic planning discussions and monitoring and evaluation processes
C. Role related knowledge, experience and skills

1) Knowledge and experience

Essential

• Educated to degree level or equivalent in relevant subject (such as social sciences, communications etc)
• Professional experience of producing and disseminating communications products for targeted audiences
• Good knowledge of international development and/or environment issues
• Researching and producing short articles to a professional standard on policy issues aimed at various audiences
• Familiarity with NGO work, ideally on development and/or environment issues

Desirable

• Specific study or experience of working on IFIs or related issues
• Involvement in the development and implementation of communications strategies
• Professional experience with NGOs
• Writing funding proposals and producing reports for charitable trusts or official funders
• Maintaining and managing website content
• Postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject
• Work experience in developing countries

2) Skills

Essential

• Excellent written and spoken communications in English
• Ability to analyse policy documents and information and identify key issues
• High degree of computer literacy, including familiarity with word processing, spreadsheets, and internet research
• Project management skills, including the ability to take the initiative and drive work forward, and attention to detail to ensure outputs are of a very high quality
• Strong desire and ability to work cooperatively in a small team
• Commitment to social justice, human rights and environmental sustainability

Desirable

• Strategic thinking about communications products
• Facilitating discussion and coordinating activities in a diverse network
• Comfortable with simple budgets and knowledge of budgeting processes
• Computer programming skills such as HTML or web programming
• Skills in maintaining contact databases, content management systems
• Other languages, especially Spanish
