Director – Project on Global Internet Policy and Human Rights
The Center for Democracy & Technology is seeking an experienced individual with expertise in human rights and/or information and communications technology to lead its project on Global Internet Policy and Human Rights. Based in Washington, DC, the job offers a rare and exciting opportunity to develop and execute strategic initiatives that promote openness and human rights on the global Internet. Through the Project, CDT aims to facilitate collaboration among a growing worldwide network of advocates and to advance policies that protect the open Internet and enhance privacy and free expression online.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The responsibilities of the position include:
•Developing and executing the overall vision and strategy for the Project on Global Internet Policy and Human Rights;
•Building relationships, coalitions, and collaborations with global civil society, as well as industry and academic stakeholders;
•Supervising Project staff and coordinating with CDT’s other issue area teams;
•Writing policy analyses, issue briefs, training materials, articles, and blog posts;
•Providing policy, legal, and technical assistance to global policymakers and civil-society colleagues;
•Representing CDT before relevant governmental and other policymaking bodies;
•Monitoring and analyzing key developments in Internet policy around the world;
•Working with External Affairs Director, identifying and cultivating potential sources of financial support, including drafting funding proposals;
•Media and public speaking; and
•Extensive international travel.
QUALIFICATIONS
This position is intended for candidates with significant experience. An ideal candidate would have:
•A minimum of 5 years in relevant legal, policy, or advocacy positions with increasing levels of responsibility;
•Substantial knowledge of Internet law and policy and related human-rights jurisprudence – legal or other relevant advanced degree preferred;
•Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a range of international stakeholders from diverse cultures and world-views;
•Strong working relationships with relevant global civil society organizations preferred;
•Excellent verbal and written communication skills – fluency in at least one language in addition to English preferred;
•Experience working on Internet policy issues in non-US forums preferred;
•Working knowledge of Internet technologies – advanced knowledge of technology preferred;
•Ability to develop and execute multi-faceted strategies to achieve project goals;
•Experience developing and facilitating coalitions and working groups, preferably on a global basis;
•Demonstrated commitment to CDT’s public-interest mission; and
•An entrepreneurial and collaborative working style.
The position offers substantial autonomy within a supportive team environment.
COMPENSATION
Salary is commensurate with experience and is competitive with public interest and government pay scales. CDT also offers excellent benefits, including health care and dental coverage, a retirement plan, and generous vacation and parental leave.
