The position is full time and the successful candidate will be expected to, subject to a period of probation, commit to spending a minimum of two years based in West Africa following a period of work, knowledge building and training in the UK. Other travel in the region will also be required on occasion.
As part of EJF’s work to reduce the impact of cocoa production and improve West Africa's fisheries, the position will entail a wide range of often demanding, but highly rewarding, activities and responsibilities. The successful applicant will work closely with EJF’s other staff in West Africa and report to EJF’s Project Coordinator, London-based cocoa Campaigner and Directors.
Desirable skills / experience include:
– Voluntary or paid experience in Sub-Saharan Africa
– Superb inter-personal skills, with the ability to work in difficult and challenging environments, applying consistently high standards of tact and diplomacy
– Experience working in a demanding, professional environment for a private, public or third sector organisation
– Expertise in, or experience working on, natural resource conservation
– Experience of project management, including managing and developing staff and superb inter-personal skills
– The ability to write and present compelling proposals
– Experience developing, managing and reporting on a project budget
– Experience working with media organisations and managing media contacts and campaigns
– An understanding of an ecosystems-based approach to community management of natural resources
– Fluent written and spoken English; written and spoken French is also desirable
– The ability to learn quickly and adapt and respond easily and effectively to difficult and rapidly changing situations.
– The ability to produce detailed, incisive analysis and reports on all aspects of the programmatic work in West Africa
– The ability to work independently/alone in difficult circumstances and harsh environmental conditions
A competitive international salary, medical insurance and relocation expenses (up to £3,000) will be provided to the successful candidate along with two return economy flights per year to the candidate’s home country if they normally reside outside of Ghana, Sierra Leone or Liberia; 20 days holiday, rising by 2 days each year (plus all UK statutory holidays) and a salary between £29,000 to £34,000 p.a – according to age and experience.
