HarvestPlus is an interdisciplinary, global alliance of more than 200 scientific and implementation partners in over 40 countries that seeks to reduce hidden hunger and provide micronutrients to billions of people directly through the staple foods that they eat. We use a novel process called biofortification, based on conventional plant breeding, to achieve higher levels of micronutrients in high-yielding, high-profit varieties of key staple foods. HarvestPlus is a joint venture between two CGIAR Centers, the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) based in Cali, Colombia and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) based in Washington, D.C. Both Institutions are committed to reduce hunger and poverty around the world through their research activities.
The first wave of high nutrient crops is now ready for rollout. For this purpose, HarvestPlus and CIAT are recruiting a highly motivated and skilled Country Manager (CM) for Development and Delivery of zinc-dense rice in Bangladesh. The position will be based at Dhaka.

Role and responsibilities

The Country Manager will be responsible initially for planning, organizing and implementing delivery of zinc-dense rice in Bangladesh to farming households. Later, additional crops may be added to the portfolio. For this, the CM has two principal responsibilities:

• Designing and implementing a successful delivery strategy, including assessing the potential for forming operational or strategic partnerships in areas such as seed supply, farm extension, market demand, and advocacy.

• Ensuring that budgets and work plans with relevance for delivery are synchronized with other HarvestPlus managers (plant breeding, human nutrition, impact evaluation, and communications).

Requirements

The candidate shall have the following competencies, skills and experience and successfully demonstrated these attributes in actual work situations:

• Experience in the conception, design and management of strategies, initiatives and programs.

• Exceptional drive and entrepreneurship, a pronounced ability to motivate others.

• Ability to work both persuasively and diplomatically in a team-based environment with a high degree of complexity and ambiguity.

• Ability to build effective partnerships across the various parts of the supply chain.

• Hands-on problem-solver with strong analytical abilities.

• Successful experience working with the private sector and/or public policy makers

• Strong end-product development focus and ability to successfully deliver products to market.

• Experience in one or more of the following fields: marketing, advocacy, product delivery, behavior-change approaches, economics, farm extension, seeds systems, plant breeding, nutrition and health.

• Speak and write English fluently.

• Preferably, speak the country language fluently.

• Be available to start work by March 1, 2013.

• Agree to intensive travel in the country and some travel outside of Bangladesh.

• Have a relevant university degree or extensive related experience (preferably a Master’s degree or higher).

Terms of employment
The Country Manager is a member of the HarvestPlus Program Management Team. The contract will be for a three-year period, with a six month probation period, renewable depending on performance. The performance of the Country Manager will be assessed by delivery targets of farmer adoption and consumption of introduced high-nutrient varieties by preschool children and mothers.
